CNBC includes a section devoted to Eastern Europe related news in its regional news within the topic Europe news.

We found an article concerning the Ukraine crisis and the creation of a new gas oleoduct from Russia to Germany and Czech Republic. In this case, Eastern Europe is used to designate a large group of countries that includes Czech Republic, Russia, Ukraine, and Baltic Republics.

In The Economist, also a section devoted to Eastern Europe could be found called Eastern approaches: Ex- communist Europe. This title very much informs the reader of what kind of treatment and consideration news regarding Eastern Europe are going to have: an analysis of the news always taking into consideration the communist background of these countries, a fact that turns them into a single entity and so, deserve a special section.

Some of the news and essays we found in this section include

It is curious to note that, while for the rest of the world, news are divided within different sections (Culture, Sports, Politics) in the Eastern Europe section a great variety of topics is handled. More news can be found at: http://www.economist.com/topics/eastern-europe

CNN and BBC don’t include a specific section for Eastern Europe, but only have a Europe section. Most of the news concerning traditional Eastern European countries are the ones related to Russia geopolitics strategies and the response they cause on other Eastern European countries, such as Poland or, in the case of BBC, the wave of racism against the Polish community in the UK after Brexit. In the front page of Europe section, when we visited the page on October 29th 2016 we were only able to find:

Other pieces of news, such as the proposal for a veto on EU funds receiving to Poland by Greece and Italy because of the migrant crisis in Southern Europe, don’t appear, though being simultaneous and of much transcendence in the future of within (and outside) Europe international relationships, as well as of much importance over the fate of Poles.

We also checked German press. In contrast to most English-speaking press, German-speaking press included a section about Eastern Europe (Osteuropa). This is what we found when we entered the section of Osteuropa in Speigel Online in October 29th 2016:

We noticed two main topics, in Der Spiegel: first migrant crisis (and its response by Eastern European countries) and second Russian expansionism (plus its response by Eastern European countries), as well as one exception: an article on young Eastern Europe designers. Little is said about the political scenario in these countries if it is not directly related to EU decisions. While much emphasis is given to migration across Eastern European countries (mainly Syria crisis) not that much is said about migration from Eastern European countries to Germany, which is indeed a very important issue since Germany is the main importer of Eastern European immigrants (to 42% of Eastern European immigrants Germany is their preferred destination). More information about Eastern European migration can be found in the section with the same name in this webpage.

In Frankfurter Allgemeine we find a section devoted to European Union (Europäische Union) within the section of Politics and a section called Eurocrisis (Eurokrisis) within the section of Economy.

In the Politics section, only a small entry on Poland’s new government is included (Poland on the Wrong Way or Lammert: Polen ist auf einem Irrweg) and in the Economy section, an anecdotic entry on the role of Russia in paying for Greece’s public debt (Should Vladimir Putin print money for Greece?or Sollte Putin Geld für Griecheland drücken?).

Finally, we checked Le Monde on October 29th 2016. To begin with, it didn’t have a specific section for Eastern Europe, so we checked the Europe section and later the European Union section. It was striking to see that, at the top of the Europe section (and not the European Union section), a map of Europe with shaded EU-member-states. Does this mean that only EU countries count as European countries?

The news included an article about the Ukraine crisis (Les Pays-Bas risquent d’invalider l’accord entre l’UE et l’Ukraine) and a chronicle about Putin and his reaction to Western revolts (Poutine se repaît de la révolte des masses en Occident).

In general, we can see that news about Eastern Europe are scarce and, when available, only related about European Union and Russian expansionism.
